America meet Chris Matthews, newest MSNBC liberal asshole

You know, I almost took a pass on this. But after listening again this morning to Chris Matthews, a pundit I used to respect as reasonably neutral, spout the typical left-wing bullshit about Jindal’s (admittedly amateurish) Republican response, I could no longer do so.

I used to love this guy. But I’ve watched as he joined the other shouting heads at MSNBC (Olberman and Maddox) as they fawn slavishly over Obama’s every word. He’s almost joined these others in unwatchability.

I’m guessing that his seemingly abrupt transformation from just left-of-center to full-blown whack-job is due to some combination of the following:

  1. He wants to run for office (Democratic of course) back in his beloved Pennsylvannia and this invective is a way of proving his Bona Fides
  2. He’s tired of playing second-fiddle to Olberman and wants to prove he can be just as hyper-partisan – sad to say that he’ll never match Olberman’s smarminess
  3. For old political bulls like Matthews, Obama represents a Christ figure, and he genuinely can’t help himself. I’ve used the analogy before – when Matthews is exposed to Obama, it’s like me walking into the house and my new puppy is so excited that she’s pees all over herself and the floor.
Whatever the reason, it’s kinda sad. As a small-government Libertarian, Matthews used to represent a voice from the left that was worth listening to. Thoughtful, scary smart, and genuinely driven to find answers. Now he’s a caricature, another far-left asshole spouting anti-Republican tripe with almost no insight.
